Upsun began as a separate product built around a more flexible infrastructure model. I helped shape how the new brand translated into the product experience, then led the design strategy for gradually bringing Platform.sh and Upsun together without disrupting existing customers.

MY ROLE

I led across brand, product design, design systems, research, and cross-functional strategy, shaping how Upsun’s identity entered the product, how both platforms could coexist, and how customers would understand the transition as it unfolded.

01 / BUILDING UPSUN

Creating a new product and visual identity

Creating a new product and visual identity

Upsun launched alongside Platform.sh rather than replacing it immediately. This gave us room to introduce a more flexible resource model and establish a modernized product experience without disrupting existing Platform.sh customers.

I worked across Brand and Product Design to translate the emerging Upsun identity into the product. I helped define product-compatible brand colors, evolve the design system, and contributed to the flexible resources experience that differentiated Upsun from Platform.sh.

02 / BRINGING THE PRODUCTS TOGETHER

Making two platforms work as one

Once Upsun was established, the next challenge was connecting the two experiences. Customers needed to move seamlessly between Platform.sh and Upsun organizations while both products continued to coexist.

A shared wayfinding system

Organizations became the bridge between the two platforms. Platform.sh and Upsun organizations appeared together in the same navigation, with product identity preserved where it mattered. Customers could sign in through either platform, return to their last active organization, and move between systems from one familiar place.

03 / COMPLETING THE TRANSITION

Moving forward without leaving existing customers behind

As Platform.sh was phased out, existing customers still needed to retain the infrastructure model they depended on. Rather than forcing everyone onto the new flexible model, we introduced Fixed and Flex organization types within Upsun.

This allowed legacy Platform.sh organizations to continue operating under their existing model while new organizations could take advantage of Upsun’s flexible resources.

OUTCOME

One product, without a hard reset.

The transition ultimately brought Platform.sh customers into Upsun while preserving the projects, workflows, account structures, and product concepts they depended on. The phased approach allowed us to introduce a new product model gradually, give customers context as the experience changed, and retire the legacy Platform.sh experience without requiring customers to relearn the product all at once.
